Having the correct flange size when pumping is one of the most important items to check off your baby feeding list. It may seem a bit overwhelming understanding how to get the right fit, but our experts have some tips and tricks to maximize your pumping sessions.
Why choose the right size
The breast shield, also known as the flange, is the plastic part of the pump that fits over the nipple to create the seal and vacuum. Getting the right fit for a flange is very important for a comfortable pumping experience. Additionally, a flange that is too large or too small can impact milk output as well as the quantity of milk you produce over time.
How to measure
Simply use a ruler to measure the width of your nipple at the tip. Do not include your areola in this measurement and take the measurement prior to pumping to get the most accurate reading. This measurement is a great starting point for your breast shield/flange size. Refer to your pump manufacturer to choose the closest size available. If that size is not comfortable, you can try the next size up or down. The key really is comfort as pumping should never be painful. Your nipple should move through the flange tunnel easily.
Not all nipples are the same
Nipple sizes vary from person to person and aren’t limited to what sizes are available through pump companies. If you find that you need a smaller size than what your pump manufacturer offers on their website you can try inserts. These are typically a soft silicone material and sit inside of the flange to modify the size. Just like our breasts, our nipples may differ in size from each other and change over time. If you start to notice that pumping is getting uncomfortable or your output has changed, try sizing again.
Helpful tips:
- Use coconut or olive oil for lubrication.
- Do the “milkshake” (literally shaking your breasts) before pumping! This helps fat globules get into milk faster.
- Work with a lactation consultant to help measure, fit and meet your pumping goals!
